Works in the exhibition
Martin Bourdeau's paintings pay homage to abstract art, and to the academic masters of centuries past. Yet what begin as odes to colour, form, and composition, become musings on the technical undercarriage of art history - our cataloguing of artworks, our codification of colours for commercial use, and our vain attempts to quantify painting's ineffability. Under such strong scrutiny, the elements of painting spring into high relief, even as the paintings themselves mysteriously disappear.
Bourdeau's museum exhibitons include, among others, Les matins infidèles - L'art du protocole presently showing at the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City. His works can be found in many public and private collections including that of the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art and the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City.
Bourdeau lives and works in Montreal.
